Frequently Asked Questions
Everything you need to know about gematria, our calculator, and the methods we support.
Gematria is the practice of assigning numerical values to letters, words, or phrases. Originally a Hebrew tradition, it has been expanded to include many English-language systems.
No. Gematria is a numerical coding system used across many traditions. While it appears in religious and mystical contexts (like Kabbalah), it is also studied as a numerological or symbolic tool by people of all backgrounds.

Yes. All calculations on Gematria Explorer run entirely in your browser. Your searches are never uploaded to our servers.
Both use the same A=1 to Z=26 mapping, so values are identical. "English Ordinal" is the cipher name used in research tools, while "Simple Gematria" is the everyday name most beginners search for. Our Simple Gematria page focuses on learning the basics; the English Gematria page compares Ordinal with Reduction, Reverse, and other English ciphers.
Jewish Gematria is an English-letter system inspired by Hebrew numerology. It maps A-I to 1-9, J to 10, K-R to 20-90, and S-Z to 100-800. It is not the same as Hebrew Gematria.
Full Reduction reduces each letter to a value 1-9 by cycling through the alphabet. A-I = 1-9, J-R = 1-9 (J=1, K=2...), S-Z = 1-8.
Sumerian Gematria multiplies each English Ordinal value by 6 (A=6, B=12, C=18 ... Z=156).
In English Ordinal and Simple Gematria: L=12, O=15, V=22, E=5. Total = 54.
In English Ordinal: G=7, O=15, D=4. Total = 26.
Our calculations follow the established definitions for each method. Calculation verification against the acceptance criteria: LOVE = 54 (English Ordinal), Reverse Ordinal A=26, Z=1.
Our calculator ignores spaces and only processes letters. This is the standard approach across most gematria systems.
English Ordinal assigns A=1, B=2, C=3 through Z=26. It is the most common English gematria system.
No. Our calculator converts all input to uppercase before calculating, so "love" and "LOVE" produce the same result.
